Defra Soil Protection Review

The Soil Protection Review (SPR) was introduced to tackle degradation threats to soil. When soil is lost or damaged through compaction, erosion or loss of organic matter it becomes less productive. It can also have a significant impact on water quality and aquatic ecosystems, contribute to localised flooding from increased runoff, and cause problems such as soil on roads.

Anyone in receipt of support under the Single Payment Scheme (SPS) must meet the Good Agricultural and Environmental Condition (GAEC) standards for soil management and protection, as well as all the other relevant standards that are set out in The Guide to Cross Compliance in England.

Cross Compliance Guidance for Soil Management 2010 Edition

The SPR has recently been updated and must be completed by 31 December 2010, so it is advisable to make a start now especially if you are moving outdoor pigs.  Your old SPR is still needed up to 31 December 2010. The changes to the SPR are highlighted below:

  • Soil Risk Record – this can now be recorded in the form of a map or in a table
  • Access to Waterlogged Land – this no longer needs an exemption however any necessary access must be recorded and damage which may occur must be reversed
  • New Post-Harvest Management section – ensures that land harvested by combine harvester or mower is left in a state where erosion is unlikely
  • Buffer Strips next to Watercourses – optional questionnaire
