EC Ground Water Directive

Transposition of the EC Groundwater Directive (80/68/EEC) was completed by the Groundwater Regulations 1998 (SI 1998 No. 2746) in England, Wales and Scotland, and the Groundwater Regulations (Northern Ireland) 1998 (SR 1998 No. 401) (“the Regulations”).

The directive requires us to take measures to prevent pollution by chemicals in two categories:

• List 1 substances should be prevented from entering groundwaters
• List 2 substances should be prevented from causing pollution in groundwaters
