Pig Health

Improving the health and welfare of English pigs is of paramount importance to the industry. It affects our cost of production, our ability to compete in the EU market, our impact on the environment, the safety of the food we produce, our responsibility to the animals in our care and our reputation as a producer of high welfare pork. Read more in the 20:20 Pig Health and Welfare strategy published in 2011, and in the Pig Health and Welfare Council Annual Report 2012 which provides a progress update.

The Pig Health Improvement Project is a key part of the strategy, with producers, vets and the allied industry working together in a network of local cluster groups to improve pig health.

Cleaning and disinfection and good biosecurity are important places to start – browse the publications section for practical advice on these topics.
