Pig Housing Development
Best Available Techniques (BAT)
Best Available Techniques (BAT) form a cornerstone of Environmental Permitting Regulations (formerly IPPC). They use the precautionary principle to define methods to prevent waste and emissions.
The BAT Reference document (BREF) describes housing systems and techniques that minimise emissions and environmental impact. These techniques should be employed when planning new pig housing and slurry storage facilities.
If you can demonstrate they have been adopted when applying for Planning Permission or an Operating Permit, planners and the Environment Agency should be assured that impacts, especially odour, will be kept to acceptable levels.
