Sustainability
Sustainability
While there is no single, universally-accepted definition of sustainability, it is increasingly taken to mean a systemic concept that takes account not only of the environmental impact of any activity but also on the value that is derived from that activity.
BPEX believes that sustainability means the following:
‘Meeting the needs of the present generation without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their needs’
‘Environmental Impacts of English Pork Production – The 2011 Roadmap ‘Advancing Together’ has been updated (January 2014) and can be found here. It shows a significant improvement in the impacts of pig production on the environment.’
BPEX has several research projects looking at the different ways it can help create a more sustainable pig industry. These include the:
Green Pig Project – looking at the environmental consequences of using home grown legumes as a protein source in pig diets
Green Pig Case Study – Sustainable Farming
ENBBIO Project – looking at Environmental and Nutritional Benefits of Bioethanol co-products
Low Protein Project – investigating whether protein levels in pig diets can be considerably reduced below current standard levels to allow producers to meet increasingly stringent targets for nitrogen emissions
The Real Value of English Red Meat – An Economic Analysis – A report commissioned by EBLEX and BPEX looking at quantifying the economic value generated by the red meat industry in England, published March 2012
