Health and Safety
Agriculture remains a high risk industry with regards to the number of serious injuries and deaths each year, especially in relation to the number of people employed.
Farmers are responsible for the Health, Safety and Welfare of not only those directly employed, but also all contractors, visitors and any third parties who may come into contact with the farming activity.
The modern approach to health and safety is through risk assessment and risk management. There are a number of regulations with which farmers must comply.
Health and Safety for Pig Keepers – BPEX publication
Health and safely is vital to all farms. The aim of this new BPEX publication is to help make your farm a safe, healthy and legal place of work for employers, employees and others who may be affected by what you do. This includes full, casual or part time workers, trainees, customers, neighbours, sales people, members of the public and uninvited visitors. Health and safety within the agricultural sector covers a wide range of topics, however, this leaflet is a guide to the issues that specifically pose a problem to the pig industry.

BPEX were involved in a Health and Safety Half Day Workshop at Eastern College on 7th June 2011. The event was part of LandSkills East, June: The Farm Safety Month. Topics covered included:
