Composting and other techniques for carcase disposal
The EC Animal by-products regulations will allow the composting of pig carcases, but only after a number of rendering treatments have taken place and the appropriate authorisations obtained. The resultant compost cannot be spread on agricultural land. These treatments make the process unviable in most situations as incineration or rendering are more cost effective.
The EC is interested in other innovative or novel techniques which are able to satisfy all of the concerns relating to pathogen destruction. Further details about the procedures to apply for approval can be found here.
