Stockmen visit feed mill - 30 July 2010
The Stockman Development East group had a very successful workshop at Crown Milling this week. They saw how a feed order was processed and found out more about purchasing of raw materials, risk management, auditing and assurance, mill processing and delivery of feed.
Roll quality and dust were of great
interest to all. Mill director Nigel Armes discussed how they can help eliminate
dust by using pre-loading sieves and not using tote bins, along with the use of
cooling bins and curing stages. They also suggested that all farmers should
prepare for winter in much more detail, making sure they have plenty of bin
capacity in an emergency. Farms should be able to hold ten days' supply with
good road access.
Since the workshop, Knowledge
Transfer Manager Colin Stone has had
a number of messages saying how much the group enjoyed it and that they can’t
wait for the next workshop, on farrowing management, in
October.
