Ventilation tips - 13th October 2009

Due to heavy investment in buildings in the South West, John Chambers presented to the Cornish Pig Club on his specialism “Ventilation”:
- How it affects performance
- How it can cause health issues
- How it contributes to behavioural changes
Ventilation systems are scrutinised when a new building is put up and then expected to work for the life of the building without any maintenance! Frequently a building will be erected in close proximity to an existing building thus affecting the original buildings ventilation!

The group discussed the following questions about their own buildings:

Are building temperatures and outside temperatures monitored?

Are LCT’s & HCT’s known?

Is the air movement pattern within the building known?

If using natural ventilation how often due you alter the vents?

Did you know that modern ACNV systems alter the inlets/outlets every 3 seconds, old systems only did it every 10 minutes?

Should fans have louvers over them?

Does the ventilation system installed dictate where the pen furniture is situated (IE feeders, drinkers lying area)?

Will the ventilation values of the building materials have an effect?
