Checking pigs - 3rd Nov 2008

How do you observe your pigs? Is it by entering the rooms in a noisy manner or do you quietly walk in and look at the pigs undisturbed?

Obviously the last way of doing it will give you a truer picture of how the pigs behave and a chance to observe the signs they may give you. A good example is piglet lying behavior in the creep area. But what does it mean, when piglets are lying on a sleeping sow? Many thinks this is quiet sweet and that the piglets are doing this to keep warm. But it may also indicate that the sow is unwell or ill, so check that she is eating and drinking well, and keep an extra eye on her well-being.
