There are two main stages in pig production, breeding – the production of piglets and finishing – the rearing of piglets up to a target slaughter weight.  Both these  elements are undertaken indoors and outdoors in the UK.
A pig farmer may choose to specialise in just breeding or finishing pigs or may undertake both – ‘farrow to finish’
