DEFRA introduced new Pig Identification legislation in England and Wales on 1st November 2003. This new legislation replaced the Pig Records Identification Movement Order (PRIMO) rules.
The key features of this new legislation are as follows:
From 1st November 2003 in England and Wales
- All premises containing pigs must be registered with the local Animal Health Divisional Office (AHDO) which will issue the unit with a unique DEFRA Herdmark.
- All pigs moving from a holding to an abattoir must be marked with the Defra Herdmark using either an eartag, tattoo or slapmarker. Identifying pigs with existing slapmarks will not be permitted.
- Pigs moving from one holding to another will be required to carry an identifying temporary paint mark that will last the duration of the journey.
