- Evaluation of the use of Qscan in a commercial feeding system - RC & VE Buckle & Son
To provide the industry with case studies of the practical use of Qscan in commercial set ups and to put focus on the benefits of this advanced technology in day-to-day management of the feeding herd.
- Improving uniformity of batches for slaughter - Bowes of Norolk Ltd.
To improve uniformity within slaughter groups and ensure a higher percentage of slaughter pigs reach their target slaughter weight. The study will assess the feasibility of weighing and grouping on a commercial scale on an ongoing basis, and measure the effects on production efficiency.
- Creating a portable weigh/draft system - Old Sarum Farm
To create a loading and draughting system to make the process of weighing, selecting and loading pigs more efficient and reduce stress and labour costs.
- Evaluation of water intake in grower/finisher pigs as a measure for subclinical disease - JH McCloy & Co Ltd.
To evaluate the measure of water intake by growing pigs as an early warning indicator of emerging disease, using the Barn Report from Farmex.
- Batch weighing: an essential management procedure - Alexander & Angell (Farms) Ltd.
To evaluate the versatility of the 15T axle pads as an alternative to the batch weighing system, to retrieve growth data from all stages of production (nursery through to finisher) and to demonstrate the value of routine batch weighing.
- The effect of light intensity during early gestation on seasonal infertility in loose housed sows - PM & PM Rhodes
To ivestigate the affect of increasing the level of artificial lighting in naturally lit sow housing on seasonal infertility and demonstrate the benefits of investing in this area.
- Improving sow feed roll quality and reducing wastage - BQP
To involve the whole of the feed and producer supply chain, including machinery suppliers, to improve the quality of rolls and reduce costly wastage in outdoor systems. The objective being to produce a blueprint for best practice for the production of feed and feeding outdoor sows to minimise wastage.
- Verispec DNA traceability - PIC UK
To demonstrate that full traceability, from farm, to stud, to plate, is achievable and as a result to develop the opportunity for full farm to fork traceability as a unique selling point.
- Piloting a system to identify labour use, cost and productivity - Delta Innovation Ltd.
To adapt and pilot an on-farm labour recording system so that it can be used by the pig industry to determine the efficiency savings that could be gained through better allocation of paid labour.
