Angela Cliff

 
Angela Cliff - KT Manager (Central) Angela graduated in 1979 from Newcastle University after studying Agriculture and then worked in practical pig production for 10 years, before going to the University of Aberdeen to take a masters degree in pig production with Dr Peter English. On leaving Aberdeen she has specialized in AI and reproduction, working for both PIC and more latterly JSR Genetics. Angela joined BPEX in January 2006 as the AI Programme Manager and is involved with the establishment of the BPEX Standard for AI Centres and promoting ‘best practice’ routines for breeding herd management.

Miriam Drewett

 
Miriam Drewett - Pig Technology Translator Miriam graduated from Harper Adams University College in 2005 with a BSc in Agriculture with Animal Science, this included an industrial placement year which was spent at W & H Marriage & Sons, an animal feed and flour mill. Miriam joined the Meat & Livestock Commission as Pig Technology Translator in 2005, her role involves co-ordinating KT activities and outputs and taking the work coming out of research programmes and turning it into something that can be effectively and easily applied on commercial pig farms.

Tess Howe

 
Tess Howe - Training Co-ordinator Tess grew up on a farm in East Yorkshire and prior to joining BPEX spent seven years working for the Humane Slaughter Association (HSA) liaising with Government, the industry and retailers. Her role involved regular visits to abattoirs and livestock markets throughout the UK and internationally providing practical advice and trouble shooting. Prior to the HSA, Tess was on the Unigate Management Trainee Scheme based at the Malton Bacon Factory where she worked in the pig buying department. She Joined BPEX in January 2007 as Training Co-ordinator and is the first point of contact for any queries regarding training, in particular the Certificates of Competence. Tess is also involved with the PIPR scheme and is currently helping identify suitable courses for PIPR accreditation.

Kayt Johnson

 
Kayt Johnson - KT Manager (East) With a background in Animal Sciences/Production from Wye College and the University of Aberdeen Kayt then returned to Wye as part of a research team working on the Response to Selection in Pigs. Subsequently she worked for the Agricultural Training Board in the research and development of training courses before joining PIC. Kayt worked for PIC for 12 years, working on the health, welfare and biosecurity programmes and within the production and sales teams both in the UK and Europe. Kayt then joined the pharmaceutical company Boehringer Ingelheim for four years as the company’s representative for pig products in the UK and Ireland, before joining BPEX in June 2006.

Nigel Penlington

 
Nigel Penlington - Pig Technologist After graduating from Harper Adams with a degree in Agricultural Engineering, Nigel went to work on farms including three years in Saudi Arabia where he progressed to become farm manager responsible for all aspects of the operation including a contracting and produce sales.
He completed an MSc in Soil and Water Engineering from Cranfield University on his return to the UK. After a spell with a drainage and utility contracting company, he joined ADAS as a Mechanisation Consultant. His primary areas of work included farm waste management systems, environmental protection, odours and land restoration. Nigel joined the MLC in 2004 specialising in environmental issues affecting the UK pig industry and production technology. 
He represents BPEX as a stakeholder representative in a number of areas including nitrates and diffuse water pollution, IPPC, farm waste and water resources, carbon footprinting and energy use

Lis Ravn

 
Lis Ravn - KT Manager (North) Lis came to the UK in 2004 from Denmark. In Denmark her family have a pig unit which, due to changes in legislation, has recently changed from a 100 sow farrow to finish enterprise to finishing only, taking in SPF pigs from 30kg, on an “all in, all out” basis. Lis has a BSc in Agricultural Science from the Royal Veterinary and Agricultural University, Copenhagen. Subsequently she came to the University of Newcastle, working as a research assistant with Professor Sandra Edwards’ team and completing her MSc on postnatal muscle development in pigs and subsequent meat quality, as a collaborative project between the Royal Veterinary and Agricultural University, Copenhagen and Newcastle University. Lis joined the BPEX KT team in June 2006.

Silvia Nicolau-Solano



Silvia Nicolau-Solano - KT Manager (Pork Chain Unit) Silvia joined BPEX in January 2007 as the Knowledge Transfer Manager within the Pork Chain Unit base at Bristol. By closely working with the industry, Silvia 's main task is to act as a communication conduit between the pig industry and the pig meat quality research groups in order to assist in the improvement and enhancement of the British pork eating quality. After graduating as Veterinary Surgeon from the University of Zaragoza (Spain) Silvia came to the UK in 2001 to work as an Official Veterinary Surgeon and Local Veterinary Inspector for a department of the Food Standards Agency. She graduated from the University of Bristol with distinction in the “Meat Science and Technology” MSc in 2003. In the last years, Silvia has undertaken further postgraduate studies related to the meat industry, such a Master in Biotechnology and PhD to investigate the genetic background of boar taint under the supervision of Dr. Doran (Bristol University).

Helen Thoday

 
Helen Thoday - KT Manager (South) Helen has a degree in Agriculture and Animal Physiology from Harper Adams Universtiy College. On graduating she worked on a 500 sow Newsham Multiplication unit, in the West Midlands, as the Service House Manager, prior to joining Allied Grain (South) Ltd as the Laboratory and Quality Control Manager. Helen has worked for PIC for the last four years, initially working at the AI stud GTC South and then latterly as the AI Services Manager and Health Coordinator for PIC in the UK. Helen joined the BPEX KT team in August 2006.
