Semen deliveries (March 2008)
Alan Hastie, unit manager
The recent decision by the Post Office to cease Sunday collections might have an adverse effect on production, with semen delivered 2 days earlier than before, getting towards the end of its shelf life by midweek and sows still to serve. To add to this concern, boxes of semen are occasionally separated en-route and are delivered 2 days apart… Where, and at what temperature, have the errant boxes been stored?
Possible solutions being considered to address this issue:
- Change weaning day
- On-farm collection
- More use of boars
- Change supply company
- Go home to bed and hopefully wake to find all of the above has been nothing more than a bad dream!
