Climate Change Levy (CCL)

Pig producers are able to enter an agreement with Defra in order to reclaim 80% of the Climate Change Levy that is applied to their energy bills making for an 8% rebate.  In exchange, each applicant has to agree to improve the energy efficiency of their business to agreed targets, bi-annual milestones are set.

Energy efficiency is a measure of energy used to produce one kilogramme of pig meat, thus it is possible for energy consumption on a unit to increase giving rise to greater productivity and the farm still pass.

To date the pig industry has passed all of its milestones, this has resulted in Defra re-aligning the targets.

Farms failing to reach their target are able to avoid penalties by purchasing
Carbon Credits.
