The UK wheat area for harvest 2008 is estimated at 2.07M ha some 13% above the area in 2007. International grain prices fell sharply last week with nearby CBOT wheat futures prices falling $28/t with abundant global wheat supplies and a firm US Dollar also weighing on prices. CBOT maize and CBOT soya oil were $35/t and $120/t lower respectively, coming under additional pressure from lower crude oil prices. Meanwhile, reports suggest large areas of the wheat crop could already be damaged in Argentina raising the prospect of a bigger soyabean crop in ‘08/09 while favourable soya bean planting conditions have been reported in Brazil..
