Health and Safety for Pig Farmers
Agriculture remains a high risk industry with regards to the number of serious injuries and deaths each year, especially in relation to the number of people employed.
Farmers are responsible for the Health, Safety and Welfare of not only those directly employed, but also all contractors, visitors and any third parties who may come into contact with the farming activity.
The modern approach to health and safety is through risk assessment and risk management. There are a number of regulations with which farmers must comply.
Health and Safety for Pig Farmers is a BPEX publication which has been created with help from the Health and Safety Executive to give advise to producers on issues relating specifically to their industry.

Eleven inspirational pig managers celebrated completion of the first BPEX Professional Manager’s Development Scheme. They wowed a small pig industry audience with their energy, professionalism and achievements, both as individuals and as a group, during a special evening of presentations.
Hear what the pig managers and course leader Alistair Gibb had to say in our video gallery
They shared many examples of how they changed the way their teams work together and improved pig productivity, as well as their own personal development as people and as managers. These are skills and experiences that will stay with them and build as they continue their careers.
One of group, Andrew Palmer, said that the programme is exactly what the pig industry needed – a course which looks at people skills and team management, which can make an immeasurable difference to a pig business.
